This time we present to our tourists a very interesting castle on a rock. While enjoying the nature of Sri Lanka, walking through stunning mountain ranges and wonderful waterfalls, the opportunity to visit Sigiriya should not be missed.

Sigiriya, which means ”lion rock”, is literally a big rock with a lion carved in it. Currently, only the lion’s paws are preserved, but it is still in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The fortress on the rock was built at the end of the 5th century by King Kashyapa. He had chosen this place as his residence because of its safety. After the end of Kashyapa’s rule, the castle served as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century, and was discovered by Europeans many years later, in 1907.

Today, the castle complex includes the remains of a ruined palace with extensive gardens, ponds, alleys and fountains. The rock is 200 meters high and visitors have to climb 1200 steps to enjoy the wonderful view.
